THE President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Chris Isiguzo, has emphasized the crucial role journalists play in combating corruption, citing investigative journalism, public awareness, transparency, and collaboration with anti-corruption agencies as key tools in the fight.
At a workshop organised by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, in collaboration with the NUJ, Isiguzo stressed that corruption remains a significant impediment to Nigeria’s progress, undermining development, widening inequality and perpetuating poverty and instability.
Isiguzo highlighted investigative journalism as a vital tool in exposing corruption, praising journalists for relentlessly pursuing hidden truths and uncovering illicit activities.
The NUJ President noted that journalists serve as a bridge between the government and the people, shaping public opinion and mobilizing citizens to demand accountability.
Isiguzo emphasized that consistent reporting on corruption can foster a culture of transparency, deterring corrupt behavior and reminding those in authority that they are accountable to the people.
He stressed the importance of partnering with anti-corruption agencies to amplify efforts and ensure legal consequences for those involved in corrupt practices.
Isiguzo urged journalists to take advantage of the workshop’s sessions on investigative journalism, ethical standards and data journalism to strengthen their resolve against corruption.
He also called on the government, civil society organizations and media owners to ensure journalists’ safety and security, providing comprehensive policies and protections to guarantee their work does not result in harm.
The ICPC has pledged continued partnership with the media to fight corruption, recognizing the critical role journalists play in exposing and combating corrupt practices
