The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Nasarawa State Chapter, on Tuesday urged its members to be road safety cautious, to save their lives and that of other road users.

Alhaji Salihu Adamu, Chairman of the union in the state, gave the advice at an awareness campaign on the “Rights and Responsibilities of Drivers”, organised by the union at the Keffi Motor Park, Keffi, in the state.

He said the union was carrying out the campaign to educate drivers on their rights and responsibilities, as well as acquaint them with the constitutional provisions of the union.

“If drivers know their rights and responsibilities as well as adhere strictly to road safety measures, it will go a long way in reducing road accidents, thereby saving a lot of lives and property in the country.

“We are here to educate you on your rights and responsibilities and to tell you what is expected of you as drivers, in order to save human lives.

“It is imperative for members to acquaint themselves with the constitutional provisions of the union, to avoid embarrassment from anybody or quarter.

“It is when you know your right and responsibilities that you can perform very well in your job, hence the need for the awareness campaign,” he said.

Adamu called on commercial drivers in the state, who are yet to register with the association to do so, for individual and societal development.

He urged drivers to avoid speeding, wrong overtaking and should obey all traffic rules and regulations while driving for the safety of road users.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some of the drivers, who spoke on condition of anonymity, commended the union for the enlightenment. (NAN)
