RIVERS Angels of Port Harcourt on Thursday scored three goals within five minutes to thrash Bayelsa Queens 4-0 at the ongoing 2020/2021 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership Super Six.

In the match played at the main bowl of the Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu-Ode, both teams played to a goalless ending in the first half of the encounter.

However, in the second half, Rivers Angels were a better side and overran their Yenagoa-based opponents to secure the maximum three points.

In the 58th minute, Maryam Ezeanagu won a free-kick close to their opponents’ penalty box, which Amarachi Okoronkwo hit against the woodwork before Ezeanagu scored from the rebound.

Two quick goals followed in the 61st and 63rd minutes, scored by Vivian Ikechukwu and Oghenebrume Ikehua respectively to make it 3-0.

All efforts by Bayelsa Queens to come back were thwarted, with Ikehua completing her brace from a rebound in the 85th minute to make it 4-0.

Rivers Angels’ Head Coach, Edwin Okon, later in a post-match interview, acknowledged that no team in the competition were pushovers.

Okon said the match was like a final for his side and his players proved they were a good team and the defending champions in the encounter.

“First of all I have to thank my God for giving me the victory. There is no team in this competition that is a pushover .

“If you watch our first and second matches, we were supposed to be at the top of the table at this level.

“The journey now starts today. I have to remind the players that it is not yet over until it is over.

“This is our final of the Super Six. Rivers Angels are a good team and the defending champions.

“This is the beginning of the journey for Rivers Angels. We have won this and are looking forward to the next game,” he said.

Also, the Head Coach of Bayelsa Queens, Moses Aduku, said his team had a bad game with the same set of players that started the league.

“It’s like this is not our day and there is nothing we can do. We had a bad game with the same girls that we have been using from the beginning of the league.

“Sometimes we win some and lose some. It is not easy to play 90 minutes twice within two days and with the same players. It’s not easy to play that way.

“But we will play to the end with two more games, hence we will fight to finish,” he said.

Also, Ikehua said she was confident of scoring more goals as the competition progresses.

“We can still do better to win our next games with hard work,” she said.
