THE National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has offered free medical services to 2,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Maiduguri.
Mr Nura Umar, the NYSC State Coordinator, made this known on Friday during the inauguration of the corps free medical programme in the camp in Maiduguri.
Umar said that the exercise was in continuation of efforts by the NYSC to enhance quality healthcare service delivery and improve the well-being of the displaced population.
He said that the outreach was the third medical intervention that was undertaken by the corps to complement the efforts of the government in supporting the needs and welfare of the IDPs.
The coordinator explained that the scheme chooses IDPs at the NYSC camp due to the deteriorating and pathetic health condition of the inhabitants of the facility.
The NYSC Coordinator said that a mini-laboratory was set up at the camp for conducting test and administration of patients.
He said that drugs were given to patients based on prescriptions of doctors, while others were counselled, and referrals made when the need arises.
Umar said that the Scheme was designed to promote national unity, socio－cultural integration as well as to facilitates national development in all sectors of the country among others.
“This is the reason why the NYSC in Borno is poised to always make its presence felt through intervention programmes in the health, education, agriculture, infrastructure and other sectors to enhance the quality of the socio-economic life of its host communities,” he said.
He assured that the medical outreach for the IDPs would be sustained. Usman Galtimari, one of the IDPs thanked the scheme for identifying with them and requested for the medical intervention to be sustained.
Galtimari urged well-meaning individuals and philanthropists to emulate the scheme by supporting the less privileged in the society. (NAN)
