THE National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) has tasked corps employers on adequate welfare to derive optimal service delivery from the corps members.
The Director, NYSC, North-West Area Office, Mr Kehinde Aremu, made the call at the 2023 edition of the corp members employers’ workshop on Wednesday in Kaduna.
The theme of the workshop was “Evolving strategies for promoting a healthy work/life balance for corp members: the role of corp employers”.
Aremu, represented by the Deputy Director, NYSC Operations, Hajiya Halima Abdulkarim, said the primary objective of NYSC was to foster unity and integration among young Nigerians, irrespective of their cultural and geographical backgrounds.
He added that the scheme also sought to equip the corp members with the essential life skills and values, which included maintenance of a healthy work/life balance.
Aremu, therefore, reminded the corp employers that as employers of NYSC members, they played vital role in fulfilling the objectives.
He, therefore, urged the corp employers to ensure early submission of requests for NYSC members, stating clearly the number, discipline and other criteria that will help the scheme’s Secretariat reduce skills mismatch.
The director added that skills mismatch was the major cause of the phenomenon of corp members rejection.
Decalring the workshop open, the Kaduna State NYSC Coordinator, Alhaji Hassan Taura, said that the theme of this year’s workshop was carefully chosen because of the rapid decline in welfare provisions for the corps members.
He added that it was also chosen due to the consistent threats to corp members security and connivance with some corps employers to engage in truancy.
Taura expressed confidence that the workshop would adequately equipped the corp employers with fresh insights on how to provide better enabling environment for corp members in their various organisations.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the workshop had in attendance Principals and Heads of various schools as well as other organisations.
The highlight of the event was the provision of free medical check ups to the participants by the corp members. (NAN)
