EBELE Obi, brother of John Obi Mikel captain of Super Eagles, has been slammed with a six-match suspension in the Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL.

The League Management Company, LMC, announced the punishment on Wednesday, March 30, by stating that the Heartland goalkeeper was being reprimanded for assaulting a referee during the match at FC Ifeanyiubah on March 23.

Unofficial video footage showed Obi pushing the referee after he was issued a red card immediately after the match for dissent while he and his teammates milled around the assaulted official.

“Goalkeeper Obi of Heartland was separately charged for breach of Rule C11 in that he assaulted the referee by pushing him down and was banned from all NPFL activities and six matches,” part of LMC’s statement said on Wednesday.

The development means that Ebele Obi will miss the matches against Nasarawa United, Rivers United, 3SC, Sunshine Stars, Ikorodu United and El-Kanemi Warriors.

The FC Ifeanyibah and Heartland were also charged for misconduct by the league body. Heartland was fined N750 000 for failing to control their players while FC Ifeanyiubah was hit with N500 000 “for failure to ensure adequate security, crowd control and access to unauthorised persons to restricted areas contrary to Rule B13.52.”

Ifeanyi Ubah, owner of the FC Ifeanyiubah, was also “reprimanded reprimanded by the LMC for failing to show positive example by encroaching on the pitch and fuelling the disturbances that led to the harassment of players of Heartland by his team members and personal aides.”
