KINGSLEY Obiekwu, the Technical Adviser of Ingas Football Club says he is happy with his team’s performance in the ongoing Federation Cup competition in spite of their underdogs status.
The former Super Eagles player told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja that reaching the Round of 16 in the competition was a worthy achievement for them.
NAN reports that Ingas FC who finished as runners-up in the 2003 Enugu State FA Cup competition play in the Nationwide League One (NLO), which is the third-tier of Nigerian football league.
They lost 1-2 on Wednesday in Abuja to Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) side Plateau United of Jos in the national competition’s Round of 16.
Ingas FC had earlier in the Round of 32 knocked out two-time champions El-Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri 9-8 on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw.
“In this competition as a whole, we were one of the underdogs. But we were able to reach the Round of 16 and that was something appreciable.
“In fact, we were the lowest ranked team in the round of 16. I think we deserve some kudos for that,” Obiekwu said.
While expressing his appreciation with the performance of his players and congratulating Plateau United on the quarter-final qualification, the 1996 Olympics gold medalist issued a warning.
“This is not the end for us. We hope to come back better and fully prepared next season.
“We hope to fight harder and go beyond this stage. Surely, we will be back,” he stated.
Speaking also on the match, Kingsley Longmiap, the coach of Plateau United, commended Ingas FC for them a good fight.
He said they were a difficult team for them to play.(NAN)
