SEGUN Odegbami, former captain of Super Eagles and newspaper columnist has declared his intention to run for the FIFA presidency. Odegbami, the only Nigerian to be named to the Confederation of African Football, CAF’s team of the century, is fondly called Mr. Mathematical by both 3sc and Super Eagles’ fans. He owns a football academy.

The 63-year-old is the third African to go for football’s top job, after Musa Bility of Liberia. It is being speculated more Africans may soon join the fray ahead of October 26 deadline. Candidates are expected to have the backing of at least five Fifa members.

But Odegbami has never held a position in the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF. Despite repeated efforts he has never got past the selection process from which he was actually disqualified in 2014.

Notwithstanding, he has quite a presence among the football fans, but that may or may not get him support from the NFF and CAF.

The CAF has already refused to endorse Bility. Orji Uzoh Kalu, former governor of Abia state was the first Nigerian to declare interest in the job.

The main elections will be held on 26 February, with Michel Platini , president of the UEFA and Chung Mong-joon from South Korea, among those who announced their interests.
