THE International Olympic Committee (IOC) will put greater focus on human rights issues when awarding future Games, its executive committee said following a meeting on Friday.

The “Strategic Framework on Human Rights” will not only focus on the selection of host cities but the running of the Games and supply chains.

IOC president Thomas Bach said the “overarching mission of the Olympic Movement is to contribute through sports to a better world.

“Human rights are in fact firmly anchored in the Olympic Charter. We will be strengthening this even further in the future.

“Our mission, to put sport at the service of humankind, therefore goes hand-in-hand with human rights.”

There was criticism of the last Winter Olympic Games being held in Beijing earlier this year due to the restrictions on freedom of expression and discrimination against China’s Uighur minority.(dpa/NAN)
