Ogbunike boils as properties worth millions razed

IT was a black Monday in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area, LGA, of Anambra State, as property worth millions of Naira were  razed over alleged murder of one, Ndubisi Oye by commander of the Vigilance Group in the community.

It was gathered that Levi Elobis, the commander, from Umueri, Ogbunike killed Oye at St. Monica’s Road, Ogbunike.

Oluma Agbugba, the fiancée of the deceased, who narrated their ordeal said: “We were coming back from a committee of friends’ meeting, in preparation for our wedding around 9.30 pm on Sunday.

“We got to St. Monica’s Road, my fiancée alighted to refill the gasoline of his commercial bus and as we were about driving off, a Sport Utility Vehicle – Hillux vehicle blocked our bus and the man who emerged from the vehicle ordered both of us come down from the bus.

“I alighted and sighted that the man had a gun. I made to make a call, but the man quickly stopped me, threatening he will kill me if I raise my phone again to make calls.

“The man ordered my fiancée (Oye) to come down from steering and shut him at close range, and there after drove off, leaving him in his pool of blood.

“I started shouting after he left and some passersby stopped bye to assist me to move him to Iyienu Hospital. He died on the way to hospital.’’

It was gathered that the deceased, 27-year-old, hailed from Ezza, Ebonyi State, while Agbugba hailed from Imo State.

Some of Ebonyi people living in Ogbunike, on hearing what happened went on rampage in the early hours of Monday and set the house of the commander and his three cars ablaze.

Junior Onwutaka, one of the indigenes of the community and special assistant to the governor on Youth Mobilisation, said he saw some men on rampage and tried unsuccessfully to stop them as the mob overpowered him.

Onwutaka added that then mob invaded the commander’s house and setting it ablaze.

When contacted, Garba Umar, the Anambra State Police commissioner, confirmed the incident, saying his command intervened and arrested the Vigilance Group commander.

“He has since been taken into the police custody. We ordered for his arrest and those that burnt his belongings,’’ Umar added.
