YOUTHS of Ogbunike Town under the umbrella of United Ogbunike Youths Association have sensitised school children in the community on the dangers of illicit drugs consumption.
The seminar, which was organised in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, took place at the Ogbunike Town Hall, Oyi Local Government Area, LGA.
The one-day meeting had in attendance school children from various secondary schools in the town, personnel of the NDLEA, community representatives and other interest groups.
Speaking to journalists, Okonkwo Franklin Ikechukwu, who is the youth president, said the gesture was borne out of the association’s love for the children of Ogbunike as the future of the community.
He said: “Apart from sensitising them on dangers of illicit drug consumption, the association also had organised quiz competition and the winner was rewarded with brand new laptop”.
Charles Efosa Odigie, public relations officer, NDLEA Anambra State command, took the children, between ages seven and 15, through the differences between licit and illicit drugs.
He also assisted them in identifying them; how they could be abused and dangers of such abuses.
Odigie, then admonished: “Children should avoid illegal drugs consumption in their own interest.
“Consumption of illegal drug can lead to so many dangerous activities and can ruin your future.’’
Ossai, a professor of psychology, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, informed them that drug abuse remained the most common cause of mental illness.
The association facilitated loans of up to N200, 000 to youths, who needed it to reinvent themselves.
