Ogun police recover 1,178 firearms, arrest 27 suspects

THE Ogun State Police Command says it has recovered 1,178 different guns, 2,266 ammunition and arrested 27 suspects within the last 21 days.
The state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, disclosed this on Thursday while parading the suspects and cache of arms at the command’s headquarters.
The Commissioner of Police said the recovery of the arms and ammunition were the outcome of the command’s operation mop up arms and compliance with the Inspector-General Ibrahim Idris’ directive that all illegal arms possessed by individuals be turned in within 21 days.
The suspects paraded committed offences ranging from armed robbery, cultism to kidnapping and car snatching among others.
Iliyasu said, “These various arms and ammunition were recovered within the period under review and from other operations carried out by our operatives.
“In all, we have recovered 24 AK 47 assault rifles, 66 pump action guns, 1,088 single and double barrel guns.
“Also, we recovered 1,025 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition as well as 1,241 rounds of live cartridges.”
He, however, said only one person had come ll0 to submit prohibited firearm in the state.
Iliyasu said since the 21 days window for submission of such arms had lapsed, a task force headed by Deputy Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Investigation Department, Aminu Al-Hassan, had been set up go after those still harbouring such illegal arms.
Among the suspects paraded were a car snatching and stealing syndicate whose members were Akeem Aribido, Enitan Rasheed and Shobogun Gbenga.
