Ogun speaker lauds journalists for promoting democratic ideals

MR Suraj Adekunbi, the Speaker, Ogun House of Assembly, on Wednesday, lauded journalists for their effective media reportage of the State Government policies and programmes in the last six years.
Adekunbi spoke shorty after being conferred with an Award of Excellence as the ‘Most Outstanding Speaker in Ogun since its creation in 1976 at the 12th edition of the Gateway News Update and Award held in Abeokuta.
The speaker said that journalists had contributed immensely to the promotion and sustenance of good governance in the state.
He described effective media coverage and reportage with regard to a two-way information dissemination, as a catalyst for promoting transparency and accountability as well as other democratic ideals.
The Speaker posited that adequate and timely dissemination of government programmes and policies to the people had brought about an all-inclusive government that allowed citizen participation.
He assured that the Assembly under his leadership would continue to partner with other arms of government to promote conducive environment for media operators and other stakeholders to enhance good governance.
Adekunbi stated that the award was a challenge for him to do more as a stakeholder in the efforts of nation building, as well as spur him to serve the state with greater sense of dedication and vigour.
The lawmaker promised to sustain the tempo of governance in the state through the enactment of more people- oriented legislations.
Earlier, Mrs Yetunde Dina, the Permanent Secretary of the state Ministry of Urban and Physical Planning, called for the sensitisation of the members on the need to ensure due process in physical development plans.
Dina spoke on the topic, “The Role of Community News Media in Urban, Physical Planning and Development’’.
She added that the media operators as well as urban and physical planning professionals must be complementary partners in designing a pleasant and serene physical environment for the benefit of the people. (NAN)
