SAMUEL Ogungbesan, a coordinating director is the new executive chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS. He took over from Kabiru Mashi, who had been in the post for about two years in acting capacity. Ogungbesan’s elevation took effect from Wednesday, March 18, when his appointment as substantive chairman was announced.

Reuben Abati, presidential spokesman, who made the announcement, said in a statement that President Goodluck Jonathan had directed Mashi to hand over to Ogungbesan with immediate effect.

Mashi was the executive chairman of the FIRS until his removal because the Senate had rejected of the nomination of Mfon Akpan. The Senate cited the federal character as the reason for rejecting Akpan. The upper legislative chamber contended that she hailed from the same region as Ifueko Omogui-Okauru, Mashi’s predecessor.

Mashi had led the agency in acting capacity since 2012 without confirmation by the president.
