Olatunji nominated for global privacy assembly award

VINCENT Olatunji, the National Commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has been nominated for the Global Privacy Assembly (GPA) Giovanni Buttarelli 2024 award for outstanding leadership and fostering international collaboration.

Mr Itunu Dosekun, Head of Media of the NDPC, said this on Monday in a statement issued in Abuja.

The GPA Giovanni Buttarelli Award is in memory of the former European Data Protection Supervisor, GPA Annual Conference Host 2018 and past GPA Executive Committee member.

The award through the GPA recognises an individual’s outstanding leadership and exceptional efforts in fostering international collaboration.

“This nomination highlights Olatunji’s commitment to driving innovation, expanding global partnerships, and promoting a collaborative approach within the data privacy and protection ecosystem.

“The visionary leadership of Olatunji, the data privacy ecosystem in Nigeria has witnessed a remarkable growth through key milestones such as deepening the knowledge of data protection and privacy in many public and private institutions.

“He contributed to the judicial recognition of adequacy principle in cross-border data transfer, playing key roles in regional and global data privacy ecosystem, commencement of bilateral cooperation with other jurisdictions, among other efforts,” he said.

Olatunji, in his response, was grateful for his nomination and reiterated the need for collective efforts in achieving common global goals.

“I am deeply honored to be nominated for the Giovanni Buttarelli Award 2024 and this is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team at NDPC.

“It underscores the power of collaboration and the remarkable outcomes we can achieve when we work together across borders.

“I am excited to continue our journey, driving innovation and fostering partnerships that make a positive impact globally,” he said.

The Giovanni Buttarelli Award celebrates leaders who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, promoted collaboration at a regional or international level in the field of data privacy and protection.

Nominees were evaluated based on their contributions to projects that had led to the development of innovative concepts or practices,and impacting the international data protection and privacy community, partnerships, initiatives that enhanced global cooperation and development.

The award winner will be announced publicly at the 46th GPA Annual Meeting taking place between Oct. 28 and Nov. 1 (NAN)
