Oliseh Set to Succeed Keshi
Sports Briefs
–
SUNDAY Oliseh is being touted to be the next coach of Super Eagles. In fact, talks were said to be in advanced stage with the Nigerian Football Federation, NFF, over his appointment as at press time. Inside sources at the NFF, said the Nigerian former captain, who won 63 caps would be handed the job in the next few days.
The 40-year-old Oliseh was part of the Nigeria team that won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1994 and Olympic gold two years later.
He also played at the World Cup in 1994 and 1998, helping the Super Eagles to the last-16 at both tournaments and in the latter he scored a memorable winner as Nigeria shocked Spain 3-2 in a group match.
A member of the “golden generation” of Nigerian football stars, alongside Jay-Jay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu and Finidi George, Oliseh has been working as a pundit, sport consultant and Fifa Technical committee member.
Oliseh has little management experience, having coached only Belgian lower league side Vervietois between 2008 and 2009, but he has the Uefa professional licence.
If appointed, he would take over from Shuaibu Amodu, the NFF technical director, and Salisu Yusuf, assistant coach who are currently in charge of the Super Eagles on an interim basis.
Stephen Keshi was the coach of the national team until Saturday, July 4, when he was sacked by the NFF.
