Ali Olanusi, deputy governor of Ondo State, has been impeached by the legislators in the state after he was found guilty of gross misconduct while in office

LEGISLATORS in the State House of Assembly in Ondo State have impeached Ali Olanusi, deputy governor. The impeachment followed the presentation of the report of the seven-man investigative panel which was set up to look into allegations of gross misconduct levelled against the deputy governor of Ondo State. The report pronounced the deputy governor guilty as charged. The panel ended its sitting at the weekend and promised to be fair and just to all parties in its final report.

Olatunji Adeniyan, chairman of the panel, after counsel representing Olanusi and the House of Assembly made their submissions, that the panel would not allow the interest of any individual to influence its decision.

In his final address, Akinlaja, counsel to the House of Assembly, said the oral and documentary evidence at the hearing backed the claims that Olanusi was guilty of the seven allegations levelled against him. Chairman of the panel said the panel would communicate its resolutions to the House of Assembly.

However, the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has cried foul over the sitting of the panel, alleging that the leadership of the state judiciary and members of the panel of receiving bribe from the state Governor Olusegun Mimiko, to manipulate the outcome of the sitting in their favour.

In a statement made available to journalists in Akure on Sunday, Abayomi Adesanya, party’s publicity secretary, said: “We have it on good authority that each member of the panel was bribed. The panel is acting a script from the governor.

It should be recalled that the deputy governor, who has been at loggerheads with the governor, defected to the All Progressives Congress on the eve of the presidential election because of perceived deficiencies of the Peoples Democratic Party which is the government in power in Ondo.
