The Ondo State Governor’s Wife, Mrs Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, has lauded the Yoruba culture, which allows a woman to rule a community as a regent.
The first lady made this known on Monday in her reaction to the prevailing culture in Aaye community in Ifedore Local Government Area of the state.
The community is being led by a female regent, Taiwo Agbona, after the demise of the king of the town.
The regent brought her people on a visit to the governor’s wife at the Government House Alagbaka, Akure.
According to Mrs Akeredolu, I was quick to state that the Yorubas are truly the progressives of all the ethnic groups in Nigeria.
“That they (Yorubas) allow a woman to rule over a kingdom even for a second shows that from time immemorial, the culture did recognise that a woman could lead.
“It is baffling that the same culture has failed to support female leadership in politics and worst still, it doesn’t allow regents to be made substantive Obas and I wonder why.
“The world has changed. Look at the throne of England.
“ The first child regardless of gender, inherits the throne.
“That’s progressive thinking at its zenith,’’ she said. (NAN)
