ONDO State Government on Tuesday began the distribution of palliatives to vulnerable residents of Akoko axis which consists of Akoko North West, Akoko South West, Akoko North East, and Akoko South East Local Government Areas.
Mrs Bamidele Ademola-Olateju, Ondo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, at the distribution of palliatives at Isua Akoko, Akoko South East Local Government Area, said that 1,200 bags of rice would be distributed to 6,000 households in the LGA.
Ademola-Olateju, also a member of the Ondo State Committee on Palliatives, said the government was aware of the hardship faced by the people, and promised that the palliatives would reach the targeted beneficiaries.
The commissioner said that the initiative was meant for all Ondo residents regardless of political affiliations, saying the palliatives included items from the Federal Government and the state government.
“Today, we are kicking off the distribution of palliatives to Ondo State residents. We have grouped five people to a bag of rice.
“Religious groups, market women, traders associations, among others will benefit from the palliatives because we have been very diligent in making this selection and we will learn a lot of lessons from the distribution,” she said.
Also, Mr Suleiman Muritala Babatunde, Ondo State House of Assembly member representing Akoko South East Constituency, thanked the Federal Government and state government for providing the palliatives.
“We carried along traditional worshipers, traditional rulers, Christian and Muslim groups, artisans and most of the segments that make up our community in Isua.
“These are the people who produced the list with us that we will distribute to. The process was free and fair,” he said.
Similarly, Alhaji Saliu Jamiu, Chief Imam of Akoko South East Local Government Area, thanked Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State for the palliatives, and said most of the local governments benefitted.
Meanwhile, Pastor Gideon Onibato, Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Akoko South East Local Government Area, appreciated God for the palliatives.
He said the masses had been praying to God for such palliatives due to the situation of the country and “with this, we know that a new beginning is coming in our country.”
Responding on behalf of beneficiaries in Isua Community, Mr Akin Aibinuomo, a former Chairman of Akoko South East LGA, said the community was given 160 bags of 50kg rice.
He expressed appreciation to government for the gesture. (NAN)
