Coronavirus Pandemic

The Ondo State COVID-19 Food Palliative Committee says it has distributed food items in 14 local government areas of the state.

The government said this in a statement issued on Sunday in Akure by Mr Alex Kalejaiye, the Spokesman of the committee.

The committee was set up by Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu two weeks ago to tackle food insecurity arising from restrictions on movements and economic activities to tame the spread of Coronavirus pandemic.

The 14 local government areas that benefitted from the intervention are Akure South, Akure North, Akoko North East, Akoko South West, Ose, Owo, Ifedore, Ondo West, Ondo East, Ile Oluji/Oke Igbo, Odigbo, Okitipupa, Ilaje and Ese Odo.

Kalejaiye stated that the remaining four local government areas of Akoko North West, Akoko South East, Irele and Idanre, would receive theirs before Tuesday.

According to him, the food items contained in each of the packs include garri/Semolina, rice, beans, Macaroni, Spaghetti and noodles.

“This is besides crates of eggs for selected categories that will still go round.

“The committee targets 2,000 vulnerable members of the society in each of the local government areas in the first phase of the exercise,” he said.

The spokesman appreciated local committees that managed the distribution centres with wisdom and enviable commitment, saying this paved way for endless success stories from the areas so far touched.

He added that he was optimistic that there would be no discordant  results from the remaining four local government areas.

Kalejaiye promised that the committee would expand its scope of distribution to various groups in the state.

“The committee is not unaware that various groups, including religious and professional bodies, deserve no less attention.

“These bodies will not be left out in our selfless efforts to reach as many as possible. Our commitment to equitable distribution of food items remains unalloyed,” he promised.

He therefore prayed God for divine intervention on the dreaded pandemic, appealing to the public to adhere to medical guidelines aimed at preventing the spread of the disease. We must strive to stay safe by obeying authorities,” he said. (NAN)
