Onigbinde Advocates Consortium of Coaches for Eagles
Sports Briefs
–
FOLLOWING the sudden resignation of Sunday Oliseh, immediate past coach of Super Eagles, Adegboye Onigbinde, former Super Eagles manager, has called for consortium of coaches in the interim for the national side.
Oliseh, barely seven month-old on the job as Eagles manager on Thursday, February 25, submitted his resignation letter to the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, less than a month to crucial 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, Afcon, double header contest against the Pharaohs of Egypt.
Onigbinde said though Oliseh’s resignation was unfortunate, the football house must move in quickly to fill the vacuum for the sake of Nigerians.
“I was really shocked with the news of Oliseh’s resignation but not totally shocked because of the unfortunate trends between the employee and employer in recent weeks may be we were merely waiting for the accident to happen.
“The contents of his resignation letter are between him and the NFF though the nation’s fate and core interests are at stake,” he said.
The former Nigerian coach said that when Oliseh was hired as coach, he expressed deep reservation because of his antecedent.
In any case, he said it was time to move on and stop moaning. Onigbinde said: “We should not waste further time ruing the rights and wrongs of his resignation but move fast to cover the vacuum because of the fast approaching Afcon double header against Egypt in Nigeria and Cairo.
“In 2002 when I was offered the job I alerted and stressed on the importance of the technical department to always take care of emergency of this magnitude.
“In the present situation the technical department should take over on interim basis and that was why when I came in I selected five coaches to assist me namely Fanny Amun, Henry Nwosu, Ben Duamlong, among others.
“What I’m suggesting is to build a consortium of coaches around a tested and experienced coach who will command the respect of the players as well as the assisting coaches.”
Eagles will host the Pharaohs on March 25 at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna, while three days after confront same side in Cairo.
Eagles need at least four points in the matches to stay in contention for a place in the coming Afcon in Gabon.
