OLIVER Onwughalu, a former Awka Zonal chairman, Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, has asked intending couples to check their genotypes before getting married to avoid bearing children with sickle cell anaemia.
Onwughalu said this while speaking to the newsmen in Nawfia on the disease.
He emphasised that genotypes which do not match suggests their immediate stoppage of the intended marriage.
According to him, failure to comply with the natural phenomenon will attract unpleasant consequences for the couple and their offspring.
The medical expect advised those already living with the condition to exercise regularly, have good sleep, moderate their lifestyles, avoid smoking, and to expectedly consult their doctors for expert advice.
