CIVIL Rights Advocacy group: HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS ASSOCIATON OF NIGERIA (HURIWA) has paid glowing tributes to the departed iconic musician and pro-democracy activist Ms. Onyeka Onwenu, describing her as a terrific builder of both the Nigerian Nation and Arondizugu her home town.
Onyeka Onwenu was also described by the civil society organisation as a legend who provided the enduring examples of resilience, consistency in what is right, hardwork and honesty just as HURIWA said the departed musician distinguished herself as a model of self-reliance and achieved massive personal success.
The Rights group which stated that Ms Onyeka Onwenu left the scene while still very actively canvassing the love of the fatherland Nigeria and working extensively on a groundswell of intellectual and musical pieces even as the Rights group affirmed that the departed musician has written her name in gold and would forever be remembered as one of the finest musicians out of Africa.
HURIWA through the National Coordinator Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to rename a significant national institution after the memory of Ms Onyeka Onwenu because above all else, she utilised music and songs to unify Nigeria and preached national integration relentlessly for decades through her songs and other civil rights advocacy campaigns.
HURIWA also recalled that historically ,the departed musician was known to be one of the most reputable builders of socio-economic infrastructures when she single headedly constructed and tarred the road leading from the Federal highway off Okigwe to her side of Arondizuogu in Ideato North local government area council of Imo State.
HURIWA stated too that: “We also remember her distinguished educational career which marked her out as a thoroughbred and well educated Nigerian as opposed to the perception that musicians do not go to school. Onyeka Onwenu was a phenomenal daughter of her Dad who was one of the earliest respected scholars in the ore-independence Nigeria.”
HURIWA recalled that the legendary Nigerian singer and actress, Onyeka Onwenu had reportedly died at the age of 72.
She was said to have died on Tuesday night at the Reddington Hospital in Lagos after slumping at the birthday party of Mrs Stella Okoli.
HURIWA quoted an online medium TheNiche as having reported that an eyewitness who was at the party confirmed the news.
“It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli today (Tuesday, July 30, 2024), and after performing, she slumped.
She was taken to Reddington Hospital and she couldn’t make it,” the eyewitness said.
However, the deceased’s family has yet to announce her death as of press time.
Onwenu will be remembered for her music albums such as In The Morning Light and Dancing In The Sun.
She also featured in movies like Half of a Yellow Sun and Lions Heart, among others.
