THE Federation of Muslim Women’s Association in Nigeria (FOMWAN) in Oyo State has called on elders, community leaders, and the media to intensify campaigns against open defecation.

FOMWAN leader in the state, Dr. Bushra Oloso, made the call while addressing newsmen as part of activities to mark the FOMWAN 2021 week in Ibadan on Tuesday.

The theme is: “My Community, My Pride: Promoting General Well-being and Stopping Open Defecation.”

Oloso also called on corporate organizations, religious bodies, socio-cultural associations, and other stakeholders to embark on the construction of public toilets and latrines.

”FOMWAN will work with other socio-religious associations across the country to end open defecation and ultimately enhancing the well-being of Nigerians.

”The practice contaminates the environment, spreads diseases, community unfriendly and promotes sicknesses for the people,” she said.

She called for stringent punishment against violators of open defecation.

The association noted that the measure would serve as a way to discourage people from such habits.

She commended the Oyo State House of Assembly for making open defecation a punishable offense and passing the Oyo State Open Defecation Bill in December 2020 which prescribed an N5,000 fine.

“The bill awaiting Gov. Seyi Makinde assent also prescribed N50,000 fine or three months imprisonment for anyone who owns a property and does not provide toilet facility within three months from the commencement of the bill.

She called on the governor to urgently sign the bill into law to discourage open defecation in the state.

Oloso said the association will communities, attend Juma’at Service, clear refuse dump sites, and visit community heads, market women, and other stakeholders on the need to stop open defecation. (NAN)
