Organisation condemns alleged indiscriminate arrest, detention by police

THE Convener of the Duty Solicitors’ Network (DSN), Mr Bayo Akinlade, on Wednesday urged the police in Lagos to desist from indiscriminate arrest and detention of citizens to avoid fundamental rights breach.
Akinlade told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that it was unlawful for the police to effect m arrest without due process.
He spoke in reaction to social media reports of alleged random arrest of persons by the police in Lagos State.
“I will not engage on who is right or who is wrong, but the following is clear, and these questions should be asked;
“Can the police arrest people on the streets without following due process?” he asked.
According to him, the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Lagos State prescribes the conditions and circumstances for arrest.
He urged that the conditions should be observed strictly.
“The police should desist from indiscriminate arrest and detention in Lagos State and anywhere else in Nigeria.
“We are free to conduct lawful businesses at anytime of the day and night, and it is our right to have the police protect us,” he said. (NAN)
