Mike Ozekhome, SAN, a human rights activist, has accused the government of not only looking the other way but condoned the continuous killing of Nigerians by suspected Fulani herdsmen in the various parts of the country.
Ozehome, in a press release, lamented the recent Plateau State massacre where more than 130 people were killed in three local governments of the state by herdsmen. He, therefore, reiterated on his clamour for true fiscal federalism that allows for state Police and community policing as a solution to the incessant killings.
“The daily slaughter ritual in Nigeria that has turned the Nigerian geographical soil into a killing field is not only criminal, but also smacks of total abdication of governance by the current government. It is most cruel, horrific, inhuman, dastardly and barbaric.” Ozekhome said.
The vocal lawyer further said the bloodshed had surpassed the Nigerian civil war that lasted for three years. Nevertheless, he accused the government of blaming people and living not to its responsibilities of protecting citizens, thereby, enthroning ethnic cleansing and genocidal tendencies. He called on the government to “rise up to the occasion, draft military personnel to these volatile areas and wash its hands off, like Pontius Pilate, of compromise, aiding and abetting of this national horror.”
Suspected herdsmen killings had on Saturday, June 23, stormed Nekan, Kufang and Ruku villages in three local governments of the state and killed more than 100 persons, claiming that it was in retaliation for the killing of their 300 cows. As at Wednesday, June 27, the dead toll had risen to 135 while many sustained injuries.
Both President Muhammed Buhari and Vice-President Yemi Osibajo, have visited the state and warned against causing religious war in the country. They commiserated with the government and the people and assured them of security of lives and property.
