THE former Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs in Kano State, Malam Muhammad Garba, has condemned officials of the new administration in the state for making unguarded statements on federal government’s subsidy removal palliatives.

Garba noted that the lack of understanding of governance was the reason why the state officials are picking holes in the palliatives.

He made the statement on Monday, while reacting to NNPP’s faulting of the palliatives’ plan, which it later retracted following a backlash from the public.

He said instead of putting measures in place, like some states have already done to mitigate hardship induced by the removal of subsidy on petrol, the Kano government is busy criticising the federal government’s plan.

The former commissioner said the Kano government should be working towards putting measures in place that would alleviate the sufferings of the toiling masses in the state rather than criticising the federal government initiative.

“The lack of understanding of what governance really is has been responsible for the inconsistencies and unguarded statements from senior officials of the NNPP government in Kano,” Garba stated.

He recalled that, 2017, while negotiation was on between the federal government and the labour union on the N30,000 minimum wage, the Ganduje administration went ahead and negotiated N36,000 minimum wage.

He said the move by the Ganduje administration had resulted in Kano State becoming one of the first state governments to approve minimum wage above that of the federal government.

Garba therefore advised the NNPP government officials to approach governance with ease and stop making statements capable of jeorpadising the peace and development of the state.

According to him: “A scenario had also played out recently when the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Baffa Bichi, gave reason for the demolition of the iconic monument, which he claimed carried a huge Christian cross, which he said was against Islamic ideology.”

“Unfortunately after an outrage, the SSG appeared on a television station to embarrassingly deny making the statement, which also further eroded his personal credibility and that of the state government,” he added.

Garba said instead of making a careful study of what is on the ground when it assumed office, the government have engaged in vengeance and also adopted anti-people policy that has worsen the economic condition of the state.

The former commissioner also said after stopping the salaries of suspended civil servants employed by the immediate past administration as well as demoting hundreds of teachers, despite it’s promise to set up a committee that will look into their case.
