THE suspension of Usman Yusuf, the executive secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS, has been extended indefinitely.

Yusuf has been on three months suspension since July 6, on the directive of Isaac Adewole, the minister of Health, to enable the investigation panel raised to probe various allegations levelled against him to its work fairly and uninterrupted.

In a letter to the embattled NHIS boss sated October 5, ‎Adewole indicated that the committee that investigated Yusuf had submitted a report, which he had forwarded to President Muhammadu Buhari.

The minister said the committee found  Yusuf “culpable in many areas” of his performance.

“I am further extending your suspension from office pending the decision of” President Buhari, Adewole said.

Yusuf, a professor of Paediatrics, who took over the management of the insurance scheme in 2016, was suspended from office following some allegations of fraud, misappropriation and nepotism which were levelled against him.

His suspension had generated controversies with the House of Representatives asking that he be reinstated.

Yusuf had also replied the minister that he would not obey the suspension, saying the minister had no powers to suspend him.

Apart from Yusuf, eight other top management staff of the agency were also suspended over corruption allegations.

The NHIS is currently headed by Attahiru Ibrahim in acting capacity.
