THE Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) on Wednesday inducted 139 qualified graduate pharmacists of Igbinedion University, Okada in Edo into pharmacy practice.
In a speech, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Lawrence Ezemonye, said the inductees made the institution’s 10th induction.
According to Ezemonye, this is an indication that pharmacy has become entrenched in the university.
He also said that the university had produced the finest pharmacists, who had excelled in their practice beyond the shores of the African continent.
He charged the inductees to be good ambassadors of the Ivory Tower and practice in accordance with the law and ethics of the profession.
In an address, the Registrar of PCN, Mr Elijah Mohammed, said that the council frowned at professional misconduct in its entirety.
Mohammed warned that any form of misconduct by any pharmacist would be investigated, adding that defaulters would be deregistered.
He urged pharmacists to be in the frontline of the fight against the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“More so, you are expected to keep off the `register-and-go’ syndrome, which has tarnished the image of pharmacists and brought the profession to ridicule.
“Always bear in mind that things take time to mature and do all in your power to uphold the ethics of the profession at all times,” he said.
Mohammed described pharmacy as a noble profession that guarantees opportunities for new graduates to practice in different fields, such as industries, communities, hospitals, administration, research, academia and journalism, among others.
Also, the Dean, Dora Akunyili College of Pharmacy in the university, Prof. Ighodaro Igbe, said the college had trained at least 708 graduates since its inception in 1999 as the first private university in Nigeria.
Igbe urged the new inductees to practice within the bounds of the law and regulations prescribed by the regulatory body.
He said that the institution had equipped them with education to change the world around them. (NAN)
