The Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate in Ogun State, Buruji Kashamu, has accused the party’s National Chairman, Uche Secondus, of trying to blackmail the Independent National Electoral Commission to drop his (Kashamu’s) name for that of Ladi Adebutu.
While the Secondus-led national PDP prefers Adebutu, INEC has accepted and published Kashamu’s name as Ogun PDP governorship candidate on the final list of candidates for the forthcoming general elections.
In a statement by his media aide, Austin Oniyokor, Kashamu condemned a letter, he said, was written by Secondus to INEC, asking that Kashamu’s name be substituted with that of Adebutu.
He described Secondus’ letter as one that “drips with the usual lies and blackmail that you have always peddled to obfuscate obvious facts and issues that are glaringly in the public domain.”
He reiterated that his recognition by INEC as the PDP governorship candidate for Ogun State was based on judgements of the Federal High Court.
Kashamu said, “The indubitable fact is that the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos had on the 24th of June, 2016, delivered a judgement in which it directed the PDP and INEC to deal exclusively with the Engineer Adebayo Dayo-led Ogun State PDP Executive.
“This same judgment was reaffirmed by the Honourable Justice M.B. Idris on the 9th of February, 2018.
“These two judgements formed the basis of the 12th of April, 2018 letter written to you by the commission, in which it informed you of its decision to comply with the terms of both judgements.
“If you chose to disobey the law and INEC decided to obey the law, how can you blame me for your misfortune?”
Kashamu said though INEC was aware of the issues and had acted on sound legal advice, he would continue to state the facts as long as “you (Secondus) are not tired of telling lies.”
