PEOPLES Democratic Party (PDP) has urged Ekiti Government to be more proactive in protecting the lives and property of citizens, even as it condemned the killing of two traditional rulers in the state on Monday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the state had, of recent, been faced with security challenges, culminating in the killing of the Elesun of Esun-Ekiti, Oba David Babatunde and the Onimojo of Imojo-Ekiti, Oba Olatunde Olushola.

The two royal fathers were said to have been ambushed and killed by the gunmen on their way from a meeting in Irele-Ekiti in a vehicle driven by another traditional ruler, the Alara of Ara Ikole-Ekiti, Oba Adebayo Fatoba.
Fatoba, however, escaped from the scene.

NAN reports that six pupils of a private school in Emure-Ekiti, three teachers and the bus driver were also abducted by gunmen while returning to Eporo-Ekiti on Monday evening.

The political party, in a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Mr Raphael Adeyanju, on Tuesday in Ado-Ekiti, condemned what it called consistent kidnappings for ransom in the state.

Adeyanju particularly frowned at the kidnapping of school children at Emure-Ekiti and the other student kidnapped on Ikere-Igbara Odo road.

He described the killing of the two traditional rulers as unfortunate and condemnable.

“In recent time, several innocent citizens had been kidnapped along Ipao-Oke Ako in Ikole local government area, while some were killed within their farms,” he said.

The PDP spokesman urged the state government to redouble its efforts at securing the lives and property of the citizens.

“They should also collaborate with neighbouring states to nip terrorism and kidnappings in the bud,” he said.

Adeyanju also sympathised with the people of Esun-Ekiti and Imojo-Ekiti over the loss of their traditional rulers.

“The traumatic and psychological effects on the people of the affected communities and local government area are unimaginable.

“We urge the state government to beef up the security architecture of the state and also ensure that the culprits are brought to book,” he said. (NAN)
