Peacepro urges FG to establish National Agency for Development
Politics
A peacebuilding think tank, Foundation for Peace Professionals also known as PeacePro has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to urgently establish a National Agency for Development Aid (NADA).
This agency would provide crucial support for NGOs and CSOs working across Nigeria to address various societal challenges, including poverty alleviation, human rights advocacy, healthcare, education, environmental sustainability, and national security.
PeacePro believes that the active engagement of CSOs/NGOs in the development space is indispensable for the promotion of peace and national development.
NGOs and CSOs have proven to be essential partners in efforts to create positive change, especially in areas where the government may not have the reach or resources to operate.
However, many of these organizations face significant challenges in accessing sustainable funding, which hampers their ability to carry out impactful work.
Countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Canada, and China have recognized the importance of NGOs in driving social change and have dedicated resources to fund these organizations both domestically and internationally. It is time for Nigeria to follow suit by creating a dedicated agency that will provide financial and technical assistance to NGOs operating within its borders.
This proposed **National Agency for Development Aid (NADA) would:
1. Establish a Funding Mechanism: By creating a transparent and accountable system for disbursing grants to eligible NGOs/CSOs, the agency would ensure that organizations working in critical sectors have access to the resources they need to succeed.
2. Promote Social Development: NGOs that focus on human rights, social services, economic growth, and environmental sustainability would benefit from increased capacity, enabling them to more effectively address the challenges facing Nigerian communities.
3. Foster Civic Participation: Active citizenship and civil society engagement are vital components of a healthy democracy. By empowering NGOs, the agency would promote civic participation and give a voice to marginalized and vulnerable populations.
4. Enhance National and Global Partnerships: The agency would facilitate collaboration between Nigerian NGOs and international organizations, enhancing Nigeria’s reputation as a leader in development and social innovation on the global stage.
PeacePro strongly urges the Federal Government to take swift action on this proposal by passing the Bill for the Establishment of the Nigerian Agency for Development Aid (NADA), which would allocate a portion of the national budget to support these critical organizations.
We believe that a well-funded and active NGO sector is key to achieving long-term peace, stability, and development in Nigeria. As Nigeria continues its journey towards sustainable development, PeacePro remains committed to advocating for initiatives that foster peace, social cohesion, and national unity.
The establishment of this agency is a necessary step towards building a more equitable and prosperous nation for all.
