MANY youths of Umuoji, a rural community in Idemili North Local government Area, LGA, of Anambra State on Thursday, February, 18, stormed the district office of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC, at Ogidi. The youths were there to protest the outrageous electricity bills sent to members of the community.
Carrying different placards, they demanded an urgent reduction in the bills which they argue defies every reasonable justification.
Arguing that Umuoji is a rural community with no industries, the youths said that it’s preposterous that the community should be billed like an industrial cluster.
“The community largely comprises of old men and women who are farmers and cannot pay such very high electricity tariff charges”, one of the youths said.
Receiving the protesters, the EEDC regional manager identified as Engr. Chinedu, in a statement by Cosmas Ikeme, national publicity secretary of Umuoji Improvement Union, UIU, thanked the youths for their peaceful demonstrations at their office and promised that an argent and immediate positive action will be taken by the management in respect to their plea.
The manager also promised that soonest the federal government-procured pre-paid meters will be distributed in every home in different communities for proper accounting and billing of charges.
He also expressed satisfaction that Umuoji is a peaceful community and that the community always pay up its bills better than some other communities under his watch.
He later met with three-man representatives of the protesters made up Emeka Enughu, Uche Udego and Chuka Igwilo.
The representatives extracted a firm promise that something will be done to the outrageous bills, the statement said.
