AMAJU Pinnick, president, Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, has been elected into the executive committee of the Confederation of African Football, CAF. He won the West African Zone B seat into the CAF executive committee by defeating Anjorin Moucharafou of Benin Republic.
Pinnick got 32 votes, 15 more than the Beninoise to be elected into office. He will be an executive council member of CAF till 2021. Speaking shortly after the election, Pinnick thanked Nigerians for their massive support. “I am really grateful for the level of support from Nigerians. I dedicate my victory in this election to God, my family members and all Nigerians.”
Meanwhile, Solomon Dalung, sports minister, has congratulated Pinnick on his victory. Dalung said in a statement, “When I became minister, I asked why there was no Nigerian representative in the executive committee of CAF. With a population of over 170 million people there was no way the CAF executive committee will be constituted without Nigerians as stakeholders.
“I encouraged the federation to try and ensure that they are represented, hence our support for the president of the NFF. This is a big achievement for Nigeria and our re-entry into African football politics.”
Also at the polls held in Addis Ababa, Egypt’s Hani Rida, Omari Selemani of DR Congo, Kwesi Nyantakyi of Ghana, Guinea’s Almamy Camara, and Lydia Nsekera of Burundi were elected to the FIFA Council for 2017 to 2021.
