THE Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) says it will conduct elections in the 17 local government areas of the state in October.

Mr Fabian Ntung, PLASIEC Chairman who made the disclosure on Monday in Jos, said that the timetable and guidelines would be officially released on Tuesday, May 18, 2021.

“By the powers conferred on us by the laws of Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electoral Act 2010 as amended, we are duty bound to start preparations for the next elections.

“The elections would be for chairmen and councillors in all the 17 local governments of the state,” he said.

Ntung stated that the commission invited the leaders of the registered political parties to inform them of PLASIEC readiness to conduct the elections.

The chairman stated that process would kick start with the release of election timetable and guidelines on May 18, which would run up to Saturday, 9th of October, 2021 when elections would have taken place.

He said that elections would take places in the 325 council wards in the 17 local council areas.

Ntung advised those concerned to immediately swing into action, adding that the timetable and guidelines would be given to political parties through the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC).

The chairman assured the people that PLASIEC would conduct transparent elections.

It would be recalled that in 2018, elections were not conducted in four local councils of Jos North, Jos South, Barkin Ladi and Riyom local council areas.

According to the PLASIEC Chairman, elections were postponed in the local governments because of insecurity.

He, however, assured the people that this time around elections would  be conducted in all the 19 local governments.

Mr Abubakar Dogara, Plateau IPAC Chairman, commended PLASIEC for initiating a process that would ensure that the democratically elected council officials hand over to another set of  elected ones.

Mr Chris Hassan, Chairman, Peoples Democratic (PDP) advised PLASIEC to conduct elections that would  be generally accepted by all the political parties.
