Plateau commissioner constructs classrooms for children learning under trees

PLATEAU Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr Ephraim Usman, has built and donated two classroom blocks for children learning under the trees in Garshei and Nangar communities.
Usman, who inaugurated the classroom blocks on Thursday in Kanam Local Government Area of the state, said that the gesture was to improve the learning condition of the pupils.
The commissioner, who hails from Kanam, said that apart from operating under the trees, they use to hold classes in people’s houses.
He named a classroom block each after the late Briskilla Mutfwang, mother of Governor Caleb Mutfwang, and Naomi Usman, his mother.
Usman stated that the primary schools in these communities were dilapidated, and the academic standard wasn’t anything to write home about.
“When the primary schools were given these communities, they had no classrooms.
“So, I liaise with the communities, and I promise to come up with something that will improve the learning condition of the children.
“And when I eventually got this appointment, I decided to come up with the projects to enable the children to learn in a conducive atmosphere.
“I wouldn’t want any child in these communities to grow up the way I did in the past.
“Education has power in every society; hence, the need to channel our focus on developing the system from the grassroots.
“Once someone is not educated, we should definitely know that the person is going to become a problem to society,” he stated.
The chairman, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Mr Sunday Amuna, lauded the commissioner for promoting the vision of the current administration in the state.
Amuna assured the communities that SUBEB would equip the classrooms with 80 seats and tables along with writing materials for the children to use.
“I want to assure the community that we will furnish the classrooms with chairs and tables.
“Already, through the intervention of the state governor, we have procured some very durable furniture from a manufacturer who has been identified by the Federal Government.
“The furniture is customized and of good standards; we will be bringing two sets to encourage the learners and the communities,” he said.
The Head Teacher of Garshei Primary School, Mr. Habibu Aliyu, said the community lost some of their children while crossing the main road to attend school.
Aliyu stated that the primary school was started one year ago to save the lives of the children in the community.
He appreciated the commissioner for coming to their aid. (NAN)
