THE management of Jos Electricity Distribution Plc (JEDC), has been commended for compensating the families of victims who were electrocuted in a Jos community.
The Kabong Community, Jos North Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau, which lost its members following electrocution, due to a power surge from a high tension cable, gave the commendation in Jos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that six people were electrocuted and properties were gutted by fire, following the incident, which occurred on Oct. 14, 2023.
In a statement on Wednesday, Dr Adakole Elijah, JED Head of Corporate Communications, said the community conveyed its appreciation when a delegation visited the company’s Managing Director, Mr Abdu Mohammed, in Jos.
Elijah, said that the community, led by Plateau Commissioner for Lands, Survey, and Town Planning, Mr Peter Gai, said their visit was in connection with the unfortunate incident that claimed lives and destroyed properties in the community.
Gai, said the visit was to commend Mohammed and his management team over the compensation of victims.
“In all situations, even in war, we will end up at a round table. And this is what we have achieved.
“Following the compensation, those who were in business before the incident have gone back to their businesses, while some have bought houses to put roofs on their heads.
“To forestall future occurrences, the community leadership has instituted mechanisms aimed at sensitising the people on how to handle electricity matters.
“This will enable them to know that illegal connections and the erection of buildings under high-tension lines are dangerous,” he said.
The commissioner pleaded with JED management to employ some dependants of the victims, to enable them sustain their families as some of them were the breadwinners.
He lauded the company for its corporate social responsibility activities in the area.
Mohammed, in his response, said he was overwhelmed by the understanding exhibited by the Kabong community.
The managing director, who described the incident as unfortunate, said it had however, created a window of opportunity for them to come together to become friends and brothers.
He stated that the entire JED family was shocked over the horrible incident that resulted in the deaths of some people, some injured, and others losing their properties.
“We cannot bring back the lives of those that are gone; the best we can do is to continue to pray for the repose of the souls.
“We will also continue to pray for the fast recovery of those who were injured, with the commitment that we will be together to support each other.
“We appreciate your friendliness and understanding following this horrible incident, otherwise this issue would have turned the entire state upside down,” Mohammed said. (NAN)
