AS part of efforts to ensure inclusiveness and forestall conflict in various communities, the Plateau government has engaged women in the grassroots as critical stakeholders in its security and peace building processes.
Speaking at the launch of the Local Action Plan (LAP) for Jos North Local Government Area on Tuesday in Jos, Mrs Anna Izam, Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development, said the gesture would strengthen women’s role in conflict prevention.
The women in partnership with other key stakeholders have produced a peace architecture LAP in line with the UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325, which hinges on gender parity at all levels of decision making.
“The LAP would facilitate conducive environment for the implementation of UNSCR 1325 because we ensured that the vulnerabilities of people living with disabilities is mainstreamed.
“This was through the translation of this document in Braille for the blind, in audio for people with hearing impairment and also in Afizere and Anaguta, which are local dialects in Jos North LGA,’’ she said.
Izam said she was optimistic the implementation of the LAP would shore up the number of women in leadership position, advance gender equality and improve the protection of women and children during conflicts.
In his remarks, Mr Philip Nyam, the Management Committee Chairman of Jos North LGA, said that peace was critical for freedom to practice religion and business.
The Chairman represented by Mr Pius Daleng, Director of Social Services at the LGA, said that the local government had included women matters in their budgetary provisions to fast track their development in the area.
In his remarks, the District Head of Jenta Adamu, Da Bako Kabala, lauded the efforts of UN in facilitating the engagement of 94 women in Plateau Traditional Council.
He said women were unique in their reasoning and would not only help in forestalling conflict but would contribute to the progress of their various communities.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the State Peace Architecture Action Plan launched earlier in the year was stepped down to four LGAs of Mangu, Wase, Riyom and Jos North.
The Plateau Peace architecture Action Plan is facilitated by the Ministry of Women Affairs in partnership with the UN Women and funded by the European Union.
