PLATEAU Ministry of Health has orgainsed a 10-day training for nurses, midwives and community health extension workers on basic reproductive, maternal and child health.

The Commisoner for Health, Dr Cletus Shirkuk, who declared the training open in Jos on Monday, described the exercise as “timely.”

He explained that the training is being supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS).

Represented by Dr Banjamin Summi, the Chief Medical Director of the Plateau Hospitals Management Board, Shirkuk said that the training is to strengthen the capacity of health workers in the state.

He added that “the participants are majorly drawn from crisis-prone areas. The state government is committed to ensuring that our healthcare sector is the best in the country.

“Gov. Caleb Mutfwang is committed to it and this is why he has ensured that counterpart funds are paid to attract partners toward moving the health sector forward.

“Our health sector is on the verge of experiencing proper renewal, our primary and tertiary hospitals will receive adequate attention.

“We thank UNFPA and NRCS for this initiative and it is our believe that it will go a long way in bridging knowledge gaps.”

On her part, Mrs Adama Yusuf, the National Programme Officer of UNFPA in Plateau, said that the training would help to check Gender-Based Violence (GBV), maternal and child mortality in communities.

She explained that UNFPA is largely working in post conflict communities of Plateau, Benue, Yobe, Borno and Adamawa states.

She added that the training would strengthen the health system in Plateau to respond to basic reproductive, maternal and child health, particularly during emergencies.

On his part, Mr Yonana Arin, the Adviser, Administration and Finance of NRCS, thanked UNFPA for funding the project.

Arin also thanked the Plateau Government for the commitment toward the wellbeing of citizens.

He assured residents, particularly those displaced, of government’s commitment to support them in the area of healthcare and humanitarian services.(NAN)
