Police arraign man over alleged N2.1m cheating

THE Police on Thursday, arraigned a 30-year-old man, Mmemngu Nbakuuv, before a Wuse Zone II Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, for allegedly collecting iPhones worth N2.1 million from a cell phone dealer.
Nbakuuv, of Emab Plaza, Wuse 2, Abuja, is standing trial for criminal conspiracy of trust and cheating.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nbakuuv was arraigned on a two-count charge, which he pleaded not guilty.
Earlier, the prosecuting Counsel, E.A Inegbenoise, told the court that the defendant committed the offence sometime in October 2022.
He said the matter was reported at the FCT Police Command and referred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for investigation by the nominal complainant, Bernard Orji.
According to him, the complainant was in his shop at Emab Plaza, Wuse 2, Abuja when the defendant collected the said iphones to help sell for him.
Inegbenoise said that Nbakuuv collected an iPhone 12 Pro max valued at N650,000, one iPhone XR valued at N200,000 and an iPhone 12 pro max valued at N750,000.
He explained that the defendant collected the phones from the complainant under the guise of helping him to sell.
The counsel stated that the defendant refused to pay the total sum of N2.1 million to the complainant and made it impossible for him to reach out to him.
Inegbenoise added that the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.
The Magistrate, Mrs Salma Halilu, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum that must reside within the jurisdiction of the court.
She ordered that addresses of the sureties should be verified by the court’s registrar and prosecutor before the defendant was released.
She adjourned the case until Aug. 31 for hearing. (NAN)
