Police arraigns driver over reckless driving, manslaughter

The Police on Tuesday arraigned a commercial driver, Adeyeye Olufemi, at Chief Magistrates’ Court, sitting at Ebute Meta in Lagos for alleged reckless driving and manslaughter.

The 30-year-old defendant, whose house address was not given, is being accused of reckless driving, manslaughter and causing injury to two pedestrians.

He is facing a three-count charge bordering on reckless driving, manslaughter and causing injury to another.

The Prosecutor, Insp Oladele Adebayo, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Feb. 9, on Third Mainland Bridge, Oworonshoki area of Lagos State.

He said that the defendant recklessly drove a Ford bus that caused the death of one Mr Samuel Abaka and injured another pedestrian, Mr Sunday Okunlola.

Adebayo told the court that the offences contravened sections 19, 20 and 30 of the Lagos State Road Traffic Laws, 2012.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs F.A. Kayode, admitted the defendant to N200,000 bail with two sureties each in like sum.

Kayode ordered the prosecutor to send the case file to the State Director of Public Prosecutions for advice and adjourned hearing until March 8. (NAN)
