THE Police Command in Enugu state on Tuesday, said it had partnered with the state Ministry of Education to stem cultism in schools through Catch-them-young outreach.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP.Ebere Amaraizu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu that the outreach would be carried out in all secondary schools in the state.
Amaraizu said that the objective was aimed at re-orienting students on dangers associated with cultism.
He noted that it was appalling the rate at which cultism was permeating schools and its consequences on the lives of students.
“The command is fusing its Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV) programme with that of the state ministry of education.
“This is to ensure that we have a robust sensitisation against cultism and its related vices.
“The collaboration will ensure that fresh students in all secondary schools in the state attend anti-cultism sensitisation; while they are followed up by guidance and counselling teachers of each school.
“For the older students, we will continue to give them periodic sensitisation as well as monitor students suspected to belong to any cult group or exhibits irrational behaviours at school.
“We want to ensure that our children are redeemed from people of questionable character and social deviants bent on polluting the society,’’ Amaraizu.
NAN reports that the command, through its Anti-Cultism Squad, has arrested some secondary school students suspected to be members of cult groups.
