Ambode Restates Commitment to Tackling Unemployment

LAGOS State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode has restated his administration’s commitment to tackling unemployment in the state assuring that the Lagos Empowerment Trust Fund will redress this challenge.

The governor gave this assurance at a stakeholders’ summit designed to provide deeper understanding of employment issues organized by the Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment with the theme, “Strengthening Partnership for Employment Opportunities and Wealth Creation in a Competitive Environment” held at the Airport Hotel Ikeja.

The governor, represented by his deputy, Dr Idiat Oluranti Adebule, stated that his government has fulfilled its financial commitment to the empowerment trust fund for year 2016 with an initial release of 6.25 billion naira and that the board of the trust is made up of successful and experienced men and women from the corporate world.

The initiative, designed to be driven by the private sector, will be credible, transparent, accountable and non discriminatory irrespective of gender, religion, physical ability/disability, political affiliation and socio-economic background and has been tailored to drive employment and wealth creation.

The governor emphasized that the administration is committed to ensuring business friendly policies and incentives to support the establishment and growth of small businesses.

The Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Mr. Babatunde Durosinmi-Etti remarked that the state government has established three job registration/labour exchange centres in Badagry, Lagos and Ikorodu Divisions of the state.

The labour exchange centres would serve as databank for the unemployed and employers of labour as well as enable planning of appropriate intervention programmes by government.

The Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, represented by his Special Adviser on Economic Affairs, Mr. Yemi Dipeolu in his goodwill message congratulated the Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode for a record of excellence in the provision of infrastructure and security in the state.

While assuring that the federal government is committed to ensuring ease of doing business in the country by providing enabling environment and legislations, he commended the state government for the initiatives taken in tackling the issue of unemployment in the state.

The Chairman, Lagos State Empowerment Trust Fund, Mrs Ifueko Omoigui-Okaro, called for a renewed collaboration between the private sector and government in order to effectively tackle the issue of unemployment.

She heaped praises on Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for his commitment to tackling unemployment in the state and assured that all the suggestions and ideas offered at the summit will be diligently considered for implementation by the Governor.

Omoigui-Okaro reiterated the trust fund committee members’ assurance to the Governor that the assignment would be concluded speedily and envisaged that the unemployed in the State would have cause to smile in the near future.
