THE Anambra State House of Assembly has moved to enact a law to establish an Information and Communication Technology, ICT, Agency in the state.
Nnamdi Okafor, member representing Awka South 1 Constituency, said the bill would seek to deploy e-governance strategy of the state government for economic development pillars.
“This is to gain national competitive advantage, improve quality of human life, learning, education, media, mass communication campaigns practical and important issue such as health and social well-being,” he said.
Okafor emphasised that establishing the ICT Agency in the state would facilitate compliance with the payment of the state levies and check diversion of Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, to private accounts.
“It is to improve the IGR and to collaborate with relevant law enforcement agencies on cyber crimes against the state and to arrest suspects of cyber crimes in the state,’’ Okafor said.
The member representing Anaocha 2 Constituency, Ejike Okechukwu, said that the ICT agency would improve the education sector.
He noted that it would provide prospects and trends for integrating information and communication into general educational activities.
Okafor added that it would create wealth, jobs, beef up information dissemination and security in the state.
The Speaker, Uche Okafor, in his ruling, acknowledged that establishing the agency would be a wakeup call for Ndi Anambra to embrace the challenge to work hard to compete with other states.
He added that the state’s website would from time to time be updated.
The bill was referred to the House Committee on Information to report in two weeks.
