THE 21 Local Government Areas, LGAs, in Anambra State jointly celebrated the New Yam festival.

This is the first time the state government and the LGAs would be jointly celebrating this festival.

They used the opportunity to express appreciation to God for bountiful harvest.

The New Yam festival, otherwise known as `Iri ji or `Iwaji’, festival was organised by the Anambra State Ministry of Culture, Tourism and The Diaspora Affairs.

The event, which took place at Ekwueme Square, Awka, featured yam competition as well as performances by various music and masquerade troupes.

Governor Willie Obiano described the New Yam Festival as an ancient Igbo cultural heritage, aimed at promoting unity among the people.

He explained that his administration would continue to support positive aspects of Igbo culture.

The governor noted that his government would always promote private partnership, especially in the areas of agriculture to enhance food sufficiency and as well boosting export of yams to foreign countries.

Igwe Sunday Okafor, the Traditional Ruler of Okpuno, Awka South LGA, who performed the yam cutting ritual, noted that various communities in the state performed their Iwaji ceremonies.

He said the event was unique as it had prospects of helping to sustain peace, unity and stability in the state.
