THE Anambra State Government has provided financial support worth about N714 million to Catholic and Anglican missions, to improve their schools.

Gov. Willie Obiano handed over the cheques at two separate occasions.

While the Catholic schools received theirs at the Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity, Onitsha, the Anglican schools were handed over theirs at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Nnewi.

The governor explained that the cheques were for the reconstruction and upgrade of their schools in the state.

Of the 733 benefitting schools, the Catholic mission had 433 institutions, while the Anglicans had 300 schools.

The breakdown of the money shows that the Catholic schools received about N422 million, while the Anglican schools about N291 million in line with number of schools for each of the missions.

Gov. Obiano expressed happiness at the successes recorded through the partnership with the missions, saying that 500 new science teachers would be engaged by his administration to improve teaching and learning.

The governor commended them and their teachers for their efforts at promoting education of pupils and students, while urging them to step up campaigns against drug abuse and cultism.

He noted that the mission schools should revert to their original names before government takeover, stressing that the state’s partnership with them was yielding positive impact.

“The 1,000 new teachers recruited will be to boost education development in the state,’’ Obiano said.

Prof. Kate Omenugha, State Commissioner for Basic Education, emphasised that huge investments made by government in technical education had attracted more students.

“Ten classroom blocks each are being constructed in all technical colleges in the state.’’

The Catholic Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Rev. Valerian Okeke, described education as a basic tool for shaping humanity, stressing that children need efficient academics to build better future.

The Archbishop praised government partnership in the education sector, stressing that it had revitalised some collapsed institutions.

The Archbishop, Province of the Niger and Anglican Bishop of Nnewi, Most Rev. Godwin Okpala, noted that assistance offered by government had helped to reposition the schools by combating infrastructure decay.

In his remarks, Patrick Ugbaja, Chairman, Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board, ASUBEB, said the intervention in the education sector boosted infrastructure transformation in schools.

He commended the government for its consistency in paying UBEC counterpart funding.
