PROF. Isaac Obasi, the University of Abuja on Thursday advised the Federal Government on the need for decent wage and working environment for workers line with International Labour Organisation standard.

Obasi gave the advice in Abuja during the 34th inaugural lecture of the institution with the theme: “Public policy and management of industrial relations”.

He said that Nigeria’s minimum wage presently was far below the international standard, adding that the wage policy had heightened tension in industrial relations environment.

He said that public policy on wage fixing in the country had failed to promote peaceful and stable management of industrial relations.

“This is very unfortunate as government’s insensitivity and conservatism is pushing labour into more ideological radicalism.

“It is unfortunate that it is during the period of general elections that most successive government are compelled to engage organised labour in some form of deceptive negotiation,” he said.

According to him, the resolution of ASUU-Government conflict will continue to be intractable in so far its asymmetric and structure-oriented character remains.

The professor said that successive governments had consistently failed to honour agreements entered into with ASUU.

Obasi however, urged ASUU to change its strategies in waging  struggles against the government, adding that a change of relation on both sides in the interest of higher education would  resolve the conflict. (NAN)
