Politics, Women

Victoria Chikwelu, a former commissioner for Social Welfare, Children and Women Affairs, has urged women to join politics as many women have made their marks in the vocation in the past.

“Women have achieved and are still achieving in political leadership positions,’’ she said this during1st Aguata Women Summit held at Dr Alex Ekwueme Bar Centre, Court Complex, Aguata.

Chikwelu cited examples of women who performed well in political leadership to include the late Dora Akunyili, a former boss of the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC.

She also mentioned Ngozi Okonjo-Iwuala, an economist and former Minister of Finance, and Kate Omenugha, currently Commissioner for Basic Education in Anambra.

“That they call you prostitute because you are a women in politics does not make you prostitute; go all out and socialise and show leadership,’’ she admonished.

Chikwelu, then, urged women: “go and perform well and achieve goals anywhere you are provided political leadership opportunity’’.

She said achievements were panacea for being in leadership.

According to Chikwelu, achievement is the only thing that can guarantee you the opportunity to serve at a higher position.

She enjoined women to strive to understand their husband’s temperament and apply wisdom in order to achieve peace at their homes.

“Do all you can to avert being made a punching bag by your husbands.’’
