FRSC commences safety campaign in Anambra

The  Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has reiterated its readiness to sustain all forms of intervention programmes to ensure safety on highways, just as it flags off “ember months“ campaign in Anambra.

Boboye Oyeyemi, the Corps Marshall, Federal Road Safety Corps, said it would make effective use of the media to dispel erroneous beliefs that evil forces were responsible for road crashes.

During the flag-off Ceremony in Awka, the FRSC boss said the ember months’ Safety Campaign was mooted to proffer a way forward for a reduction in road traffic crashes.

Oyeyemi, represented by Kehinde Adeleye, the zonal commanding officer, said that already, operational strategies had been lined up for this year’s ember months campaign to ensure safety of lives on highways.

“The Ember months are periods of festivity, when many people erroneously believe that evil forces on the roads are responsible for road crashes and fatalities; whereas it is the struggle on the part of motorists to travel,’’ he said.

According to him, enforcement programmes shall be running concomitantly with the enlightenment campaigns to curb specific offences such as light violation, drunk-driving, route violation and use of telephones while driving.

Flagging off the campaign, Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra described road safety as a critical component of security architecture, geared toward saving lives and property in the state.

The governor, who was represented by the State Head of Service, Barr Harry Uduh said that Anambra would support any campaign aimed at promoting human safety on highways.

He said that the state government had commenced palliative works on roads in the state with extra traffic light installed in strategic flash points in this period of the year.

Earlier in a welcome address, Sunday Ajayi, the sector commander, FRSC, had said that ember month’s awareness campaign was part of its sensitisation activities to keep the public abreast of traffic infractions.

He cautioned motorists against indulgence in overloading, lane indiscipline, speed limit violation, stressing the need to adhere strictly to traffic rules and regulations, especially during the yuletide season.
