Failure by Israel’s coalition leaders to reach agreement on cabinet positions has increased the likelihood of early elections, Israeli media reported on Friday.

The reports came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with coalition partner Naftali Bennett on Friday.

The prime minister  is seeking to fill the soon-to-be vacant defence ministry post.

But he is thought to be facing opposition from other partners in the right-wing government, the reports said.

Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman announced  his resignation on Wednesday  from the conservative coalition government of the prime minister.

The resignation was in   protest at the ceasefire agreement the government endorsed with  Gaza.

The minister said  his decision, takes effect 48 hours after he puts it in writing.

Lieberman described Tuesday’s Egyptian-mediated  cease fire deal with the Palestinian group Hamas as  “a capitulation to terror”.
